Berlin, you are so wonderful? That may be true, but it is also a very one-sided view of Germany's capital. With our #lesenswert selection, we would like to introduce you to a series of books that show facets of Berlin that lie outside the mainstream.
The discovery tour starts with radio presenter Bettina Rust and her book "Berlin -Lieblingsorte": hidden parks, unusual shops, culinary insider tips... Maybe your new Berlin favourite place is among them?
We continue with Katja Oskamp's "Marzahn Mon Amour" to a district on the outskirts of Berlin that is probably not familiar to tourists, but is nevertheless just as much a part of the city as chic Prenzlauer Berg or hip Neukölln.
Things get a bit more serious with "Klassenkampf" (Class Struggle) by Lorenz Maroldt and Susanne Vieth-Entus, which exposes the shortcomings of the German school system, which were particularly noticeable for parents, teachers and students in Berlin during the pandemic. A book that initiates important debates!
Tanja Dückers presents Berlin's chocolate side in "Sweet Berlin": We take a look over the shoulders of traditional chocolatiers, visit praline, cake and ice cream manufacturers and learn about Berlin's culinary history almost as if in passing. Interesting not only for connoisseurs!
