“To Sit A While”. By Alison Saar Lorraine Hansberry’s glorious prescient voice emboldened generations of Black women like myself, who because of her words, mustered the courage to put our own truth on the stage. So today I’m so proud to honor her legacy and amplify her voice by erecting this beautiful statue by Alison Saar in the center of Times Square, the beating heart of the American theater, commemorating her vast contributions to theater, activism and American discourse. She will travel next week to the Schomburg, then Brooklyn Bridge Park and then travel around the country to places including stops at Howard U, Spelman College, Minneapolis, Detroit before taking her permanent home In Chicago. The Hansberry Initiative is two pronged, a sculpture and a unique scholarship that will cover, not the tuition, but the living expenses of Female and Non-Binary dramatic writers of Color in graduate school. We have raised two thirds of our 3.5 million dollar goal. We would like to ask your help in fulfilling its promise. Thank you, Julia Jordan and Lilly’s for your leadership.
