“Rising from the deepest depths of the Indian Ocean is a steep-sided underwater mountain some 4.5km tall, its flat-topped summit protruding a little over 350 metres above the ocean's surface. This tropical jungle-covered limestone outcrop is home to unique wildlife, with endemic crabs and seabirds calling it home. The island is completely surrounded by reefs, teeming with colourful sea life. When I first glimpsed Christmas Island through a gap in the low cloud, it felt like the plane was approaching Jurassic Park. I was visiting to help @Chrisbrayphotography, who now calls the island home, lead a photo tour. Naturally, snorkelling in the warm turquoise waters featured regularly on the schedule. Constantly I was amazed that within a few short metres from the beach we could be exploring a vibrant coral reef and surrounded by schools of fish.
