Welcome to @blackcreekcommunityfarm 🐝⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ As as part of @fiskars’s #ProjectOrangeThumb program, I traveled to Toronto to tour Black Creek Community Farm. Black Creek had a sterling reputation from the outside community, but it still managed to exceed my expectations with their productivity, organization and diversity of programming. Here are some of the highlights from my visit:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Black Creek is a food producing MACHINE! Even though I was there in early spring before the crops really got going, they were prepping a sea of seedlings and growing tomatoes in their hot houses. With this much space, it is difficult not to get overwhelmed, but they have managed to donate 522,000 pounds of produce between their emergency food box and market garden programs 🤯⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣They also have a wide array of gardens that have their own special focus. The welcome garden, kids garden, senior garden, and medicine wheel-garden were just a few of the many unique growing spaces on the property, and it is a testament how they can connect with everyone in the community 🤝⁣ ⁣ I even got to inoculate mushroom logs for the first time! I’ve done the practice with sawdust and plastic bags, but this is the old school way that is said to bring out the best flavor.
