HOW TO FREE-STYLE A GALLERY WALL. You know I love a good gallery wall full of random vintage art. For clients, I map out the art to scale in a drawing, but in my own home I tend to free-style it. This means trial-and-error, embracing imperfection and lots of spackle.
The first and hardest step to winging it is to hoard a ton of art. I’ve been collecting from flea markets and thrift shops for over a decade, so I have lots to pull from, but I also give you permission to steal from other rooms and move things around your home.
I don’t think there’s an exact formula but there is a sense of balance and that is a mix of art size, a frame’s visual heft and of course color. Stand back and looking at how things balance out and if it feels off try a new combo. Stay loose with it and get weird—who says you can’t turn a painting on its side if you like how it looks (besides my husband who won’t stop mentioning it)?
If have a bunch of art and you’ve been waiting for the perfect arrangement to reveal itself, I’m handing you a fistful of nails and a hammer—just go for it! 🖼🔨
