Yesterday morning, we stood with the families of Lands End II who said: NO to luxury developers Chetrit & Related's plans to convert the neighborhood playground into a parking lot. Turns out that the REASON that Chetrit is trying to raze down this playground, is because they needed to relocate the parking lot that was razed in Two Bridges to make way for the megatowers π€―π€¬π€π’
Rutgers Slip Playground is part of the LE2 landscape & a fixture in the memories of both youth & elders who live here. This playground is the place where kids come back home to. It's a meeting spot for the elders who are exercising in the morning. Chetrit and Related was trying to take that away. To hear from the LE2 tenants that they found out about it very last minute - a few days before developers were ready to tear the playground down - was unsurprising but upsetting nonetheless. It's the gall of Chetrit & Related to try to sneak this through, when they thought no one was watching.
Ignoring calls from tenants, workers, and elected officials who raise concerns about their developments, sneaking around, and forcing their way into getting what they want - this is right out of the Chetrit playbook, & it is playing out with the megatowers in Two Bridges as well. Too bad for the developers that we are organized πβπΌ, and we will FIGHT tooth & nail for the things that bring our communities joy & life. πͺπΌπ₯
π¨As of now, the developers have put a pause on razing down this playground. We don't know when they'll strike again, but we'll be ready to defend our neighborhood.
