'essential_protozoa_1862' is part of an amazing generative art show at @unitlondon right now! 🥲 Feat. @ix.shells , Helena Sarin, @tylerxhobbs , @emilyxxie_art , @ognyveli , @reas , @zach.lieberman , @krista.kim , @cheyuwu345, @williampan
For this special piece, I wanted to combine the worlds that I'm personally most fascinated by: biology, natural history, AI and the analogue printing cyanotype technique
The word "protozoa" was coined in 1818 by zoologist Georg August Goldfuss, meaning "primitive, or original animals"(ur-'proto- + Thier 'animal'). Goldfuss created Protozoa as a class containing what he back then believed to be the simplest animals.
Radiolaria are one particular type of protozoa, they are unicellular and characterized by the fact that they produce mineral skeletons.
For the dataset, I digitally collaged several illustrations of radiolaria from the 1862 publication by Ernst Haeckel and then used it as the starting point for a generative, AI process.
I also made a 100cm/39" long cyanotype to accompany the digital work in the way of inverted cyanotype (using a white background and blue foreground). It's my first time exhibiting a cyanotype piece alongside a digital one, hope you like it! 💙
The piece is on exhibit from 13th Sept-16th Oct as part of @inourcode w/ @artoninternet
