When I was a child I had a love/hate relationship with nature. Sometimes it was the ultimate playground, climbing fallen redwoods and resting on moss bright enough to resemble the most synthetic of my favorite candy. But more often than not, I left bitterly cold and damp. It was apparent that nature was completely indifferent to me and I felt *personally* offended by that.
As an adult this apparent indifference is one of my favorite components. It is deeply humbling and a reminder of something larger at works - something that can only be loosely tapped into when the facade of “me” falls away against the magnitude and undeniable intelligence that beckons in forests and beaches and prairies and hills.
What is your relationship with nature? How has it evolved and why?
