Too much to unwrap here. Does anyone REALLY understand just how much of a musical genius Thom Bell was? It goes way beyond creating some “cool” songs with Gamble and Huff and some “killin’” arrangements. This man was a pioneer in many ways. I’m currently working on an essay on the importance of Thom Bell. I’ll have it done soon. In the meantime, just for starters, put on “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)”, “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)” or “You’ve Got Yours and I’ll Get Mine” and remember that the pantheon of African-American commercial orchestral arrangers (not big band arrangers, ORCHESTRAL arrangers) was mighty thin. What made Thom Bell stand out? I’ll explore that in my essay. RIP to the great Thom Bell. 🙏🏾
