I show ya’ll my first drafts a lot, but I thought it might be useful to show you the types of questions I ask myself in revision. So here are two examples from this morning’s writing session. Not every pass will have questions like this. These are the sorts of questions I couldn’t have asked myself in earlier drafts because I was still discovering the characters and plot points. Now that I have a good sense of who they are, what matters to them, and the trajectory of their story, I can add the depth and detail that takes a story from objectively fine to something better. This is where I assess things like pacing of emotional arcs, threading in symbols and motifs that have developed organically as I’ve drafted, working in where I need more interiority, etc. Hope this can be interesting or helpful in some way!
