When we were down to the wire, I saw “Netflix-YA” next to the title. And I didn't know what “YA” stood for. I've never engaged in the YA category. I watch documentary films in my free time. I was really taken aback. I really loved this project, and I am a massive fan of Mindy Kaling and her work and her point of view. But I had a very candid conversation about how, at this stage in my life, I don't want to be a Disney mom. I'm not there. I have too many stories inside me to tell and, I feel like, so little time to tell them. I'm an immigrant mom myself, and I didn't want the Disney version of my experience to be portrayed on film, on TV, at no point. They really assured me that wasn't what I was signing up for, and I took their word for it.”
