One of my favorite things about living in New York is being able to experience the many cultures across the African diaspora. Within the 5 boroughs that make up NYC, you come across people from Caribbean, Afro-Latine, East and West African countries who speak in different languages, dialects, and accents; who have different reasons for burning sage, palo santo, and other herbs; and who cook rice in so many different ways that are all amazing (I’m not touching the jollof rice debate 😅). Not to mention, the energy and the camaraderie you feel when your eyes meet with someone who’s skin reflects the sun just as yours does and you exchange that assuring head nod or smile that allows us to be seen and welcomed by each other. All across the globe, collectively, we are proven to be the blueprint. We are the jewel of the universe.
