Have you tried dry brushing before? Dry Brushing (Garshana) is an Ayurvedic practice I learned years ago and have been a part of my morning routine for a while now! It’s a Kapha pacifying practice that has so many incredible benefits. I’m a Vata-kapha so I like to do my practice with a dry brushing glove so it’s gentle on my dry skin. I also do Abhyanga (oil massage) right after this practice to nourish my skin before I take a shower. Garshana refreshes and stimulates the skin and lymphatic system, enhancing blood circulation and the release of accumulated toxins. It’s a practice that can be done anywhere from 2-7 days a week depending on your Ayurvedic body type!
There are many videos online that shows how to properly do this practice but here are a few pointers that I keep in mind 🤍
- Use a brush or glove depending on your body constitution
- Gently brush the top of the head in circular motions
- You can gently dry brush the face but I prefer to do a Gua Sha for this step
- Using long strokes brush the arms and legs in the upward direction of your heart
- At the joints, brush in circular motions
- Massage the belly in a clockwise motion
- Finish with a nourishing body oil massage and shower
Do not dry brush on very sensitive skin, an open wound, sunburn or inflamed areas. Especially if you have psoriasis or eczema.
Always be gentle with yourself and start any practice slowly. This is not medical advice so please check with your doctor if you have questions!
