Navigating breast cancer has brought me to my knees on countless occasions while at the same time opening my eyes oh so wide to the profundity of being. Of fragility. Of liminality. Of our ever-present vulnerability. Puncturing the very notion of taking health (and youth) for granted. From mammogram, biopsy, to diagnosis to countless scans, genetic testing, lymph node tracing, bilateral mastectomy, daily radiation, esophagitis, multiple reconstructive surgeries, the long bumpy road of recovering from them, awaiting test results, poking and prodding, daily medication, scars galore, oncologist as a mainstay, the list goes on. Getting to know and make peace with my newfound body has been a mind bending experience in itself. Here’s a snapshot of the last year and a half... One of these days—soon, soon—this existential odyssey will be in the rearview mirror. One can only hope...
