In the area there are 46 settlements, the so-called Zagorochoria, which are scattered on the foothills and slopes of Pindos. It has an area of ​​about 1,000 square kilometers and the shape of an inverted equilateral triangle. The southern tip of the triangle touches the capital of the prefecture, Ioannina, the southwestern side is formed by Mount Mitsikeli (1,810 m), the Aoos River and Mount Tymfi form the northern side and the southeastern side follows the Varda River to Mavrovouni (2,100 m) near Metsovo. The population of the area is approximately 3700, which gives a population density of 4 inhabitants per square kilometer, compared to the average of 73.8 for Greece overall.
