I call this chapter: Fellowship in Surgical-Oncology (and ~Marriage~)
Navigating life alongside another human is somewhat of an imperfect art (shocker). It requires not only acknowledging the subjective reality of another, but also seeking to understand their unique experience with love, curiosity, and gentleness. It involves learning what supportive partnership looks like. It involves *unlearning* maladaptive behavioral patterns that are often influenced by past wounds. It necessitates deep reflection in order to gain insight about your own needs, in addition to your partner’s. This is vastly complex given the fact that we all process, cope, and approach adversity differently. We must do so consistently, being patient with ourselves and practicing encouragement for another, no matter how our surrounding environment changes.
As our environment has changed and shifted, we too have changed and shifted. Whether experiencing restlessness or stillness, whether in disagreement or on the same wavelength, whether in a season that tests us or a season that propels us towards prosperity—we do what we can, with what we have, where we are.
I am so extremely proud of you for doing what you could, with what you had, where we were. The resilience and commitment we’ve both cultivated has paralleled the dedication you’ve shown in your fellowship, highlighting how growth in one area can reflect and reinforce growth in another.
The growth I’ve witnessed from you over this past year seems truly immeasurable at times. You graduated from fellowship last week; however, demonstrating one very *measurable* and tangible truth: you are now officially a Head & Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgeon (!!!!!!!! x 1,000). You are an extraordinary human, Joshua Horton. Let’s keep doing the hard work for ourselves, for each other, and for others. Now time to go cure some cancer in Louisville!!!
