When creator brought me dreams of jingle dancing
I never took that for granted .
Even back then when I hadn’t even truly learned the significance of the dance or the story of the dance ,
and hadn’t been initiated as a jingle dancer yet .
I never took it for granted .
And because of that , I followed my heart and became a jingle dancer.
When you learn to dance and learn the stories , you then gain a responsibility as a dancer
To carry on the stories and the movements by giving to others what was given to you .
Never keeping it for yourself .
Nothing truly belongs to us .
When we learn the dances , the responsibility is not to hold onto them for ourselves ,
but rather
to give them away as a gift and to teach them to the next generation.
And also to our fellow tribal sisters and brothers who are reconnecting to our culture .
That is also the intention behind tribal dance performances. To teach non natives about tue beauty and movement of who we are .
That is why we keep sharing .
Powwow or not .
We suit up and dance .
As an offering to those who come to watch .
It’s not just a show .
It’s a responsibility.
