They’ve turned a plot of land into a slice of heaven - cosy wooden cabins, retreat weekends, yoga, a Somerset apple orchard that makes delicious cider, wildflower meadows and an actual apothecary that makes potent essential oils - parties with live music - you get the idea - the dream basically!! 🌿 As it was #WorldSoilDay this week - with the theme “Soils, where food begins” - I spoke to the owner Richard Howard - an expert in medicinal and apothecary plants and soil science. He’s also the essential oil formulator behind @balancemeskincare “Soil is as much of an ecosystem as a rainforest in the palms of your hands.” ... which is why we need to protect it. Here are a few tips that we can do here and now: 🌱 Make a compost pile with your uncooked food waste. 🌱 Support farmers by buying directly from them. I’ve just joined @stroudcommunityagriculture - £63 a month for all my organic veggies. Freshly picked-to-plate. 🌱 If you have outdoor space, let flowers and wild plants grow for soil diversity and wildlife. I haven’t cut my lawn for years - I also like the wild look so win, win - not sure my neighbours agree though :/ 🌱 Avoid using harsh chemicals and fertilisers. 🌱 Use peat-free compost to help protect the world’s peatlands. 🌱 Join a local community garden or allotment scheme and start growing your own fruit and veggies.
