Is it a Mondrian, yes or no? As Pride week is almost coming to an end, we'd like to bring attention to the origin of pride by highlighting an important work from our collection #prideisaprotest 🏳️‍🌈 Infiltration and spreading information were key artistic strategies for the queer collective General Idea (Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal, and AA Bronson). By reformulating iconic works by Rietveld, Mondrian, Duchamp, and others, they aim to bring attention to the AIDS crisis. General Idea produced the series 'Infe©tions' shortly before Felix Partz died of AIDS in 1994. In 'Infe©ted Mondrian #2' (1994), the dogmatic yellow of Mondrian, who only used the three primary colors, has been painted over with the color green, which General Idea also used in their famous AIDS poster. The collective's work will be presented in a solo exhibition at the Stedelijk in Spring 2023.
