Howard Hodgkin was born in London on this day, August 6, in 1932. One of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary painters, Hodgkin composed powerful, expressive works that, while nominally abstract, bring representation, gesture, and affect into urgent relation. An exhibition of Hodgkin’s final works, “Last Paintings,” was presented at Gagosian, London, in 2018. The show included the final six paintings that the artist completed in India prior to his death in March 2017, five of which were exhibited for the first time, alongside more than twenty other paintings, never before exhibited in Europe.
