It’s not giving ✨wellness✨ to me...
As a woman who was a little girl in the early 2000s, I vividly remember comparing my body to that Ralph Lauren ad in my Teen Vogue magazine I loved so much. I would pinch and prod and try to figure out how to get my waist smaller and my thighs thinner. I WAS 11 years old and even that stunning model didn’t look like that— it was serious photoshop.
Then came the “flat tummy teas” the “waist trainers” and yet no real symbol of what a HEALTHY body looks like rather that one that fits the societal trends at the time.
Toxic wellness culture needs to end with this generation. Period. It’s on us, GEN Z has enough on their plate, I’m serious. This time around I feel like a big sister, I’m watching the trends come back, the thinner frames, the low rise jeans, the expectations are starting to mount with hyper sexy/ micro mini everything + platforms (I’m sorry but Prada looking like a hyper-sexualized Bratz doll was not cute then and it’s especially not cute now) and all I can think of is how many young people are adding even more feelings of inadequacy on top of the challenges of navigating the world/ social media today.
Keep your head up, focus on the spaces that create SPACE for all types of gorgeous bodies and know that we can change the narrative if we stop buying into and engaging with the kinds of toxic content and products that promote such ideals.
