More is not more. I love numbers, I love statistics, and graphs and data. I used to believe that more hours training meant I was a better athlete- that if I simply had the biggest weekly totals, I would be the strongest runner on the the start line. Not quite so simple young Katie.
With my yearly strava data rolling in, I took note that in 2022 (my most successful year of racing to date) I trained fewer hours than the previous 3 years. I rested more and took more easy days, making sure that when I actually wanted to train big or push hard, I felt good enough to do it right. I prioritized running over other sports (except skimo in the winter) which admittedly resulted in the most distance I’ve ever run in a year, but brought down those coveted “total training hours” I used to hold so dearly.
Overall I think most people would be surprised at how unexciting and uncomplicated my training really is (sorry @jasonkoop 😬!). It’s just steady, consistent work that keeps on building. Some days it’s easy, some days it’s hard, and (almost) every day I love it.
But here are the numbers because we still love numbers 😉
