Many have asked me my opinion about the Amber Heard v. Johnny Depp defamation trial. I have refused to respond as the mainstream and popular opinion is that Amber Heard exclusively abused Johnny Depp or that their relationship is "mutually abusive" despite Amber and Johnny never having mutual power dynamics... Men get the luxury of hiding behind preconceived notions of masculinity. "Well what man will publicly come forward if it wasn't true?" "Do you know how hard it is for men to admit they were abused?" This luxury of people defaulting to truth when a man speaks is all too familiar. A woman, LGBTQ+, or child has the unfortunate task of working from the beliefs that riddle their identity. They must not only prove what happened to them, but they must also package it in a pretty pink bow, if they are exhausted with crying and chose to be strong, well that's proof it never happened because who wouldn't breakdown when talking about such hard trauma? And if they do cry, the validity of their tears will also be questioned. And if their memory fails them, you know like all of our memory does especially when discussing trauma which our brain tends to tuck away the best it can for survival, then we are the liars they thought us to be. You can't win for losing in these trials. Very few side with the victim and very few victims will ever see justice. But of course all those feminist talking points go out the window when the victim isn't perfect.
