MEMBRANES - The pioneers of inflatable art – such as Andy Warhol, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Otto Piene, and Jeff Koons – created artworks using materials and techniques known to most via toys, carnivals, and swimming pools. These works employed wonder, playfulness, and humour as a means to critique and dismantle the division between “high” and “low” culture that characterised much conceptual art from the 1960s and 1970s. Today, inflatable materials are signature mediums of artists such as Lang/Baumann, Paul McCarthy, Victorine Müller, and Franco Mazzucchelli, while others incorporate inflatables into their diverse practices for the impact they have in conveying – or subverting – a message. Despite working with the same fundamental materials, the featured artists take different approaches, delivering a variety of aesthetic, social, and political commentaries.
