The stoke scene in Yakutat, Alaska, is budding. There’s only one youth surf camp in the entire state, and it’s in this remote Southeast Alaskan town that’s only accessible by boat or plane. Less than 700 people live there. Of the youth population, Native Tlingit kids make up three-quarters and 90–100 percent of Yakutat Surf Club. “The water means a lot to us as Indigenous people,” says Yakutat Surf Club’s Tlingit leader, Gloria Wolfe. “Bringing these ideals to our youth through surf camp has been a really good way to remind them, and myself, that we as Tlingit people no longer have to compromise ourselves in any space at all.”
