Endangered Kootenai River white sturgeon released by biologists in northern Idaho after careful sampling.
The Kootenai River white sturgeon is landlocked, living roughly between Kootenai Falls in Montana and Kootenay Lake in British Columbia.
Since the species was listed via the Endangered Species Act in 1994, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has worked with numerous partners to regularly monitor population trends and ensure the sturgeon are tagged.
This 6-foot-long Kootenai River white sturgeon was released last fall outside Bonners Ferry during a routine sampling with Idaho Fish and Game.
Full list of partners in this conservation effort: Idaho Fish and Game, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, British Columbia Ministry of Forests, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, U.S. Geological Survey, Bonneville Power Administration, and USFWS Fisheries.
