‘FEAR CESSATION’ PT. 1 (Introductory Capsule Collection, 2022) by Jean Louie Castillo Fear Cessation evaluates the embodiment of fear through the exploration of Filipino folklore’s ‘Aswang’ phenomenon: the personification of fear. The Aswang are worn as accessories symbolising a second skin; the layer that conceals our inner damsel. The line is blurred between fearing and being feared which is translated into design metaphorically through concealment and intimidation. Keyword: ‘protection’. After being cornered by Parisian thieves, Jean experienced physical assault as well as having valuables and essentials stolen from him. This led to obsessive fascinations of safety, survival and vigilance. Fear Cessation is an attempt to cease self-destructive internal fears using outer physical layers such as fabric by adding humour and safety purposes to clothing. The research involved all types of ‘protection’, from armours, helmets, hidden pockets and band-aids to cocoons, bat wings, Catholic symbolism and Filipino amulets. Intimidation is a concept malleable enough to be in line with humorously lavish, over-the-top appearances, and hopefully encourages those who don’t see eye-to-eye with society outcasts and non-conformists to runaway (in the JEAN fantasy world).
