Spring/Summer 23 Collection WHIRLPOOL Presented as part of @LondonFashionWeek Finding direction amongst feelings of aimlessness and an unknown future, for SS23 PRONOUNCE took the circle motif and vintage Chinese vinyl dolls as their guiding compass. Continuing their obsession with the circle, this season Yushan Li and Jun Zhou shifted the focal point away from their signature cut-outs. Instead, a fast-spinning circular pattern echoes the movement of a spinning top, and dances across tailored cropped jackets, cocooning coats, zip-up tops and shorts, applied to the surface of clothes with block splicing details and three-dimensional rope. The language of hand craft runs throughout the collection which is created from high-quality cotton, linen and ramie fabrics, together with recycled materials which are elevated with hand-contrasted phantom thread-like stitching as seen on schoolboy shorts, and a Mongolian hand-knitted polo jumper and hat made from mercerized yarn. Vinyl dolls recall the designers’ memories of the 1990s, reimagined in thick indigo denim as a figurine rears its head from the breast pocket of a sleeveless jacket. Retro doll faces are digitally printed onto shirts using eco-friendly printing technology, their shrunken heads incessantly repeat on a pair of shorts alluding to the herd mentality of the masses. These disfigured profiles appear again on a knitted vest in hand-beaded embroidery and woven figurines are clutched under arms, as PRONOUNCE use both hand and machine to make real of the unknown.
