Mohamed Bourouissa's Périphérique: a critical recomposition of mass media imagery @mohamedbourouissa Périphérique is one of photographer Mohamed Bourouissa’s first and most exhibited works, realised between 2005 and 2008 and published as a book by Loose Joints (@jointsloose) in 2021. Straddling reality and fiction, a documentary approach and stage photography, the project reflects on the imagery of Parisian banlieues socially constructed by mass media, in an attempt to reveal the artificiality of what is daily passed off as real. Périphérique is the winner of PhotoBook of the Year in the Paris Photo/Aperture PhotoBook Awards 2022. Mohamed Bourouissa (b. 1978) is a photographer from Algeria, he has lived in France since he was five years old, growing up in the suburbs of Paris. His practice describes contemporary society implicitly, by its contours. With a critical take on the mass media image, the subjects of his photographs and videos are people left behind at the crossroads of integration and exclusion. Words by Nikola Lorenzin
