A whale shark encounters a plastic bag while swimming peacefully. The equivalent of a garbage truck load of plastic is dumped into the sea every single minute. We certainly have a plastic problem, but that’s not the whole picture. A study published last month in Scientific Reports found that up to 86% of the large pieces of floating plastic in the garbage patch are items that were abandoned, lost or discarded by fishing vessels. All roads lead back to the commercial fishing industry.
