"We have always wished, with our recuperation art, to make a revolution in the neighborhood. We always thought that we could produce many different things out of materials often dumped in Haiti. I remember looking at the river, the Bois-de-Chéne, when it was littered with tires and iron—that’s where we got the idea of combining these materials with wood. We found fellow artists and we all started sharing ideas." Evel Romain (@romain_evelromart_imaginary) is a sculptor hailing from Grand Rue, the main north-south artery of downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti—home to highly-skilled woodturners, sculptors, and finishers who, for decades, produced handicrafts for the nearby Iron Market. Romain is a part of a cohort of artists known as Atis Rezistans, who emerged in the late '90s from among the apprentices of these artisans, and whose distinctive work draws from this background. Romain's work is informed by his training as a carpenter since the age of 12, making craft sculptures to be sold at the Iron Market. In 1998, he began training under fellow Grand Rue artist Celeur Jéan Hérard (@celeurjeanherard) in recuperation art. Today, his work is inspired by social issues in Haiti, Vodou, and sex. "My hope for the future is to keep making work. Now I have a small workshop, and place to show work. We are gaining visibility and encouragement. Now I’m thinking of making a sculpture from tanks and helicopters and toy weapons that imagines how we might destroy all the weapons in the world—like a hammer.
