the paradise garage 84 king street new york city (1977-1987) 70's disco music slowly morphed into 80s house music. it became deeper, darker, tribal, spirtual, transcendental. and of course, the hallucinogens assisted with the elevation of your mind, your body and your soul. beam me up scottie! it was on a wednesday night, a school night... a seismic shift occurred. may 19th 1984, to be exact. the very first time i walked up that ramp to paradise. my maiden voyage to the now infamous nightclub, featuring the best sound system in all of new york and the thunderous beats of the legendary dj larry levan. it also happened to be keith haring's first "party of life." that was why i was in attendance. like alice, i fell down that rabbit hole and found myself in a strange wonderland filled with the most amazing colorful characters. like cinderella, i too lost a shoe in a warehouse full of potential prince charmings. i remember, vividly, the final party. the closing party in 1987. it was a two day marathon of dance. truly, the end of an era. nyc in the 80s: a decade of decadence and debauchery. from the first time, to the last... i remember it all. except, the parts i don't. i find it amazing, in retrospect, to see it technically was only three years of my life (1984-1987), but it seems like a lifetime of memories were packed into those three years. every saturday night/sunday morning, like clockwork, off i went, to free my soul. church. sadly, many of my comrades are no longer here. but they will forever live, dance, laugh and kiki in my heart. i thank the lord for his grace, mercy and blessings. it is only because of HIM that i am still here, socking and serving, dipping and doing, twisting and turning. can i get am amen up in here? see y'all house heads tomorrow. #theparadisegarage #thegarage #housemusic #larrylevan #the80s #80sglam #nycnightlife #housemusicallnightlong #loveisthemessage #graciaspapadios #keithharing #partyoflife #studio54 #xenon #thesaint #thedanceteria #thelimelight #area #thebassline #twilo #thesoundfactory #thechoice #savetherobots
