I've been wanting to do this story for a while now. For @voguemagazine, I wrote about fashion's cultural appropriation issue; On vintage or secondhand sites, I continue to come across "Indigenous-inspired" pieces that are stereotypical, ignorant, or sometimes, even racist. But instead of getting mad about it—I've started to purchase them, creating my own little archive of appropriated Native items. Turns out, I'm not alone in this reclaiming approach—many of my Indigenous friends do this exact same thing. We all agree that it’s an odd transaction—to pay for goods that essentially rip off our heritage. But with each purchase, I feel we are rescuing the souls of Native folks who are trapped within these pieces. Taking possession of them almost feels like a calling, to document how my people have been treated in the fashion landscape—and how we’ve been able to rise above. And at least now they can now rest in a good home. That’s worth every penny. Read more at the link in my bio. 👊🏼
