I’ve been to 50+ bars in Tokyo, and this one is definitely one of the most fun! It’s run by a group of Buddhist monks, and the vibe is totally unique. The menu is so cool—most of the cocktails/food have some Buddhist connection, whether through the ingredients or the concept, with drinks like “Never Ending Suffering in Hell” and “Nirvana in the Pure Land.” The drink Nirvana in the Pure Land recreates the vibrant colors of the “Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss” described in classic Buddhist texts. The best part? The drinks and food are only around $4 USD! . Around 9 p.m., the music stops, everyone puts down their drinks, and the monk takes his spot in front of a tiny shrine to start chanting.
