1. You’re buying matching sets. I’m really sorry to anyone who went to RH or Pottery Barn and spent a fortune on matching sets and ultimately feels disappointed with their space. It might seem that matching sets will give you cohesion, but they actually do the opposite. Instead, layer in textures, tones, and palettes to create a room that has personality. 2. You’re buying everything new. Even the most modern of spaces should be sprinkled with vintage pieces. A really cool piece from an estate sale is going to give you such a better vibe in your home that a lamp from Target. 3. You’re Ignoring the architecture. As a designer, I feel strongly that a home’s interior should be reflective of the exterior. Skip the shiplap in a mid-century, avoid zellige in a Georgian, and so on... 4. You’re replicating looks rather than staying true to your design style. This is true in so many facets of life and can be applied to home as well. Instead of replicating looks, integrate your own personal style into trends and build a “look” over time that is reflective of you personality. If you’re not sure where to start, I’d love to help you, book a 1:1 video call with me where we can chat all about creating your dream space! 5. You’re rushing the process. I know it can feel overwhelming to finish a space, and tempting to bring it together quickly, but good design takes time. A great deal of time. Consider things like light, architectural style, existing pieces, scale, and color.
I’d love to learn more about any upcoming design projects you have. We are currently accepting new projects late fall/early winter 2024. If you’re planning a new build, remodel, or need some help with your existing space, let’s connect!
