#ModiglianiUpClose 6/18: What’s she hiding under that hat? There’s more than meets the eye in Modigliani’s most Laturec-esque portrait in the exhibition. Almost directly under the model’s sharply chiselled face (look at those to-die-for cheekbones!) X-radiography revealed a figure of a plumpish man. This hidden portrait was either painted by Modigliani himself or by another artist. An outline of ANOTHER head is positioned inversely underneath the nude’s torso. Brushstrokes by the nude’s hat and head that do not correspond to the upper part of the composition indicated that there was something lurking beneath its surface. But that’s not all. When the canvas is turned on its back and inverted, there is an additional finished portrait that also holds a secret or two...To find out more, see my next post t because there are at least six different painted heads underlying the recto and verso collectively.
