12/12 marks the day I asked the best question of my life to this celestial being (and the day she said “yes”) This woman. This woman has made my professional life over the past few months/years possible, and makes my personal life everyday the stuff of golden dreams. In addition to singing weekend concerts with top symphonies around the country (not her homeland) , she has shouldered the majority burden of childcare, groceries, school drop-offs, doctors visits, bedtimes, all the unsung heroics that make it possible for me to be “magically” pulling double-duty onstage. Many women (tbh all kinds of folx, but she’s a woman, so for this post it’s about women) in Scarlett’s position don’t get the credit they deserve. This business is unkind to women like Scarlett, little thought is given to how much is asked of her and how much she has been through bringing children into the world. This patriarchal inheritance of ours has to be reevaluated and dismantled from the inside. What she has managed to do these past few months has been nothing short of superheroic and I can’t help but think it shouldn’t have to be that way. 12/12 is always a magical day for us, but this year it’s particularly special- she will see our dear friend @realgavincreel in his original @walkonthroughmusical in the afternoon and will be at #Chess tonight to cheer me on. Let it be known that she is the hero today- nothing happens without her. So if you see a golden lioness, curly locks and spirit bursting out of whatever hat is failing to contain her- stop her and tell her she’s a goddess.
