One of the biggest fights Jak and I ever got into happened because I got upset and called him a bitch ass nigga. Even though, mind you, he called me a bitch ass nigga almost every single day. If asked, he would say the difference is because I was saying it to hurt his feelings, but he was saying it because I am one. For Jak, bitch and nigga were like poetry. They were words that meant everything and nothing at the same time — this ever changing water of the gods. We were all bitches and we were all niggas because it was funny and comedy was all that matters.
Over the past few days I’ve been thinking a lot about the purpose of goodbyes. How we’re supposed to do them. Who they’re for. And I think goodbyes are just meant to remind us that none of this is permanent. Our kindnesses and our weaknesses, our joys and our hurts, they’re all temporary. We are as fleeting as the words we choose. And so, at the very least, our words might as well be funny.
Love you, you bitch ass nigga.
