The @untermyergardens are located in Yonkers, NY (about a 35 min commute from NYC). It is completely free to visit! It is 43 acres and features gardens that make you feel like you’re transported to different parts of the world.
History:
The gardens are named after Samuel Untermyer a successful lawyer in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Federal Reserve System, advocated for regulation of stock exchanges, was paramount in the destruction of Hitler’s regime, and, along with his wife Minnie, gave significant financial support to groups supporting women’s right to vote. He was super passionate in horticulture and his ambition for this garden was that it not be less than the “finest garden in the world”.
Tips:
- Go on a weekday to beat crowds.
- If you can’t go on a weekday, arrive when they open at 9am because it gets crowded later on!
- They do tons of concerts, events, and more depending on the time of year. Check out their light show during the holidays!
How to get there:
- Drive: It is 35 minutes from Manhattan. If you need to rent a car, I recommend using @Getaround. Open this post in a browser, then copy the link below to save $20 off your first ride. https://www.getaround.com/invite/c5a9a29e-f674-5322-bc50-cfa03eae31f4
