I’ve been lying awake in bed since 3:30 am, unable to fall back asleep. I can hear the familiar sounds of small children waking up in the next room over, ready to start their day with a zeal not even great coffee can accomplish. Outside the sky is pale gray, almost pewter, except for near the horizon where it’s a soft duckling yellow. The trees still appear like sumi ink drawings upon a light canvas, palm branches carving out long thin swords across the sky. It is morning now and the day begs to be attended. Just a few minutes more I’ll lay here, I think. There is something inherently gentle and innocent about this hour that makes me want to swaddle it tightly and press it against my chest. Sing softly. Yes, like a newborn babe after the long furious night, at last and at once thoroughly peaceful, the nerve-shattering wailing almost a dream now, an impossibility even from something so young and precious.
