Delving into the unique past of Belvoir, one of the few castles in England that has remained in one family throughout its uninterrupted history. According to our journey into the castle archives, the suite including the Wellington room and the Chinese bedroom were decorated in chinoiserie panels that date from the mid-18th century. Originally purchased in 1754 (receipts were found amouting to the then very costly sum of £22), many of the lengths had yet to be hung and were thankfully saved from the fire in 1816 that destroyed the Castle. We then set about achieving the same depth of colour as the original paper, as well as faithfully reproducing the kaleidoscopic flora and fauna. In an enchanting instance of history echoing the present day, de Gournay’s production methods remain essentially unchanged since the hand painting of the original wallpaper. This recreation has now become part of de Gournay’s permanent collection of historically inspired Chinoiserie wallpapers. @belvoircastle @duchessrutland @sibylcolefax @collierwebb @gsdltd @colefaxandfowler @littlegreenepaintcompany @papersandpaints @fenwickandtilbrook @vaughandesigns @robertkime ____________________________⁣ #deGournayxBelvoir #degournay #interiordesign #handpainted #handpaintedwallpaper #belvoircastle #chinoiserie
