"I heard a new song by @chrislaufman and knew I wanted to make something for it immediately. The concept presented itself quickly, but I knew that while simple it would be a challenge to shoot on any budget. Super 8 turned out to be the perfect format for us. ⠀ My DP and I didn’t want to use a DSLR, but renting anything was out of our price range. Thankfully Ingrid found a Beaulieu 7008 Super 8mm camera, capable of shooting 80fps, with a beautiful Angenieux f: 1.4 \ F: 6-90 mm lens. The owner of the camera thought it was broken, but we were able to power it with a 9v guitar-pedal cable and an extension cord running from the truck cab. Super 8 allowed us an ample depth of field, so the operator would not have to pull focus on the barrel from the back of a moving truck. ⠀ After some tests, we found that we liked Ektachrome 100D Color Reversal for its tight grain, vibrant skin tones, and strong saturation. We knew that we would be shooting with a wide-lens with the subject at a distance from the camera, and the 100D was perfect for keeping the subject sharp and separated from the landscape. With the right light, costume and locations, Super 8mm delivered a distinct atmosphere and mood from the first frames of the video in the way that no other format would. The simple, small camera package also allowed us to move quickly with a small crew. ⠀⠀ Shooting a long-take on a vintage camera from a moving truck at 80fps with no monitor and limited film was certainly unnerving, but I trusted My DP Ingrid to let me know if we got the shot, and we did.
