August 27th was a magical evening. We marked the 85th birthday of @alicecoltraneofficial with a concert at @grandperfs in Los Angeles presented by @coltranehome and @dublab. Producing this show was a dream come true. The music of Alice Coltrane had deeply touched my soul and continues to guide me. Having the confidence of the Coltrane Family (especially @michellecoltrane who worked side by side with me to make it happen), Alice’s @vedantic_center ashram community, and all of the musicians involved meant the world to me. Together we realized a vision that made our little corner of the universe vibrate with joy. @musicbotofasinasurya and @miguelatwoodferguson are two of the most devoted musicians I know and it was a dream to collaborate with them. Their remarkable grace and artistry brought out the best in the ensembles which were ambitious in scale. There were so many incredible individuals on stage that night, including a large number of student string players who were so patient and dedicated to the intent of the musical offerings. @alexpelly’s visuals, created in the moment, through modular video synthesis provided a highly attuned focal point as the music was manifested. @barbarelle_s and @teebs__ warmed us up through their DJ sets and @harmony_holiday paid homage to Alice through the reading of an original poem. The Grand Performances team was one of the kindest and most professional crews I’ve encountered. Each and every one of them was focused on elevating the program through their contributive energy. The audience was one of the most diverse and lovely I’ve ever encountered. Alice’s spirit drew us all together and was aglow throughout the space as people, meditated, smiled, danced and swayed along to the music.
