What makes Richard Learoyd’s works so extraordinary? Learoyd uses a Camera Obscura which is an ancient, optical device and the precursor to the photographic camera. In its most basic form, the Camera Obscura is a dark room with a small hole in one wall. Light is admitted through the hole resulting in an inverted image of the outside subject cast onto the opposite wall lined with photosensitive paper. The image transposed onto this paper is processed by Learoyd in his studio. Learoyd is charge of every element of the picture making process, he has a deep understanding of the subject, light, paper and chemistry that is needed. By employing this early method of photography, Learoyd not only achieves the illusion that his subjects might lift off the page, but he also mimics the effects of realist painting. The closer you get the more life enhancing the images become.
