I remember vividly one day while watching music videos as a young boy, Mary’s “Everything” video came on. I remember sitting there watching in awe because in my young 10 or 11 years, I had never seen a such a beautiful black woman displayed in such stunning scenery. The music, the helicopter, the voice, the angles, the facial jewels. The details blew my mind. Even back then, to me, she looked like what I imagined a Black Queen to be. Mary J. Blige introduced me to the beautifulness of the African American woman. The femininity, the strength, the sacrifice, the face, the confidence, the body, the fashion, the creative genius. I think Mary represents this not just for me, but for everyone who has ever had the opportunity to experience her art. Men and Women are allowed to be more experimental and less judged for things that might not be the standard.
