In DC, I saw monuments and read a lot of words about LIBERTY and FREEDOM. And then I went to @nmaahc ! This museum was filled with trauma underground, but as you ascended the levels of this magnificent structure that chronicled the African American experience the past 500 years, you experienced light, inspiration, fire, and revelation! I saw YOU! Yes, you! My Black Brothers and Sisters who stand on the shoulders of the trailblazers who cleared the path these last 500 years of obstacles. When I saw Thurgood, I saw YOU. When I saw Sidney, I saw you! When I saw Venus, I saw you. When I saw Frederick, I saw you! When I saw W.E.B and Ali and Carver and Banneker and Madame CJ Walker and Russell Simmons and Colin Powell, I saw you! And to our Allies, I saw you there too. You were Abigail Adams and Garrison and Susan B Anthony and Abe, the Caucasians who joined us to create the NAACP. I saw you there. The students who protested looked just like my white friends from high school. I saw Obama. I saw US! An immigrant father and an American mother created a President. If that ain’t America and what we can do when we join forces, I don’t know what is?!! These last 500 years could have been so different. What are we gonna do with the next 500?!?
