Simon Rex was on his way to the gym when I called him. “I’m actually driving, which makes my interviews better because I’m in a flow state,” he explained. Over the course of his car ride, he reminisced with great enthusiasm and genuine gratitude about the many adventures his career had taken on. He understands the preternatural of his storyline as the genesis of his career was a famed stint at MTV during the late nineties and early noughties where he helped define an era of vestige pop-culture. From interviewing Jackie Chan, Tupac and Madonna, to becoming a part of the Scary Movie franchise and adopting a rapper alter ego, Dirt Nasty, it would be difficult to reference this time without mentioning his name, and yet Simon doesn’t seem to have changed. Now, playing the lead in Red Rocket, his performance is being hailed by Hollywood after audiences witnessed one of those thoroughbred acting moments ultimately leading me to the conclusion that yes Simon Rex can really do it all.
