Today we celebrate World Beach Day! On this day, we’d like to bring awareness to problems our beaches face, such as pollution, erosion, and threats of sea level rise, while also challenging everyone to keep our beaches beautiful, safe, and clean. This World Beach Day, we are spotlighting the Malibu Living Shoreline Project at Point Dume and Zuma Beaches. The Malibu Living Shoreline Project (MLSP) was established in the Winter of 2020 and aims to increase the resiliency of the shoreline through the restoration of sandy beach and foredune habitat. A healthy living shoreline supports habitat for shorebirds and native dune vegetation, provides a natural defense against sea level rise and coastal erosion, and increases community engagement and awareness around impacted coastal dune ecology. These benefits work in tandem with beach recreation, so that we can all continue to swim, surf, sunbathe, and even rock climb at our beloved beaches! On World Beach Day, we encourage you to visit the Malibu Living Shoreline site, or head down to your local beach. When visiting, remember to follow the beach rules -- such as disposing of all trash, leaving what you find, and keeping pets on leashes and away from wildlife.
