Retinoids are a class of molecules derived from vitamin A or having structural and/or functional similarities to vitamin A. Topical retinoids have evolved over the past several decades from first generation tretinoin to fourth generation retinoids, which have advantages in potency, tolerability, photostability, and other indications. Topical retinol exfoliates the skin, increases skin cell turnover, and stimulates collagen synthesis. It is considered the gold standard for its anti-aging and skin clearing benefits.
