Today marks the anniversary of James Deering’s death. He died in 1925 aboard the steamship SS City of Paris on his return home to the U.S.
Having died a bachelor, his nieces -- Marion Deering McCormick and Barbara Deering Danielson – came to inherit Vizcaya and were instrumental in transitioning the private estate to a public museum. Vizcaya first opened its doors to the public in 1953 as the Dade County Art Museum.
